The role of the Deputy Sheriff is often two fold. The Sheriff's office is usually responsible for enforcing the laws within the county in which they work. The second and often more popular aspect of the Sheriff's offices is to have as their primary responsibility the jail and prison transport. This is often the case in the Northern states.
